LUGOFF - Mary Elizabeth Pitts “Lib” Hough, 91, passed into the presence of her Lord JESUS CHRIST on March 16, 2011 at home in Lugoff with her husband, Harold, by her side. Born in Conway, on September 19, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Pittman “Lizzie” Pitts and Wesley Capers Pitts. They moved to Camden when she was 12. Mrs. Hough remained in Camden and then Lugoff living with her husband, son and family. Elizabeth was a historian and teacher. She graduated Valedictorian from Camden High School in 1936, Winthrop College in 1941 with honors, and earned several Master’s Degrees from Vanderbilt University. She taught middle and high school in Camden for eight years. She helped start the Sandhills School in Columbia, which serves dyslectic students and taught reading there. The school was formerly Columbia Reading Foundation. Mrs. Hough was passionate about history and genealogy. She wrote many articles for the Camden Chronicle focusing on Kershaw County history. Many of her works can be found in the Archive collections. She was a contributing writer to numerous books and publication on Kershaw County and War between the States history. Elizabeth was active in several community organizations. She was a member of the John D. Kennedy chapter of the UDC for over 50 years serving as their historian for over 30 years and several terms as their president. She was a charter member of the Kershaw County Historical Society and served as historiographer for over 30 years. She spearheaded their project to survey and record information from the Kershaw County Cemeteries. She was a member of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden and a faithful member of her beloved Lyttleton Street UMC Anchor Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hough married Harold Woellner Hough in 1950 and together they raised Hereford cattle on a farm outside Camden. Surviving are her husband, Harold Hough; a daughter, Mary Louise Robinson (Heyward); and four sons, Joel Hough, Albert Hough (Angela), Richard Hough (Olga) and George Hough. She also leaves five grandchildren, Paul Robinson, Eric Robinson, Nathan Robinson all of Columbia, Cailyn Hough and Rebecca Hough of Lugoff; a sister, Carolyn Reedy (John) of Florida; sister-in-law, Reba Pitts of Columbia; and cousin, Ada Lee Pittman, Jacksonville, Fla. Elizabeth was predeceased by a brother, Wesley Pitts. Visitation will be held at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a burial service at Jeter Family Cemetery in Carlisle, S.C. Memorials may be made to the John D. Kennedy Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Richard Kirkland project or the Jeter Family Cemetery Fund.
