“Sonny” was raised in Atlantic City and attended the Atlantic City Public Schools. As a young man, he enjoyed sports, gymnastics and played several musical instruments, preferably, the stand-up bass guitar and he served his Country in the Korean war as a teen. Over the years, Sonny had long lasting employment at: The Atlantic City Convention Center and Ginsberg Bakery. He was also an independent skilled carpenter and residential painter. After retirement he devoted his extra time as a custodian at the Shirley B. Foster Elementary School in Chesilhurst, NJ. Always the busy one, he enjoyed gardening, carpentry and walking. He was eager to help friends and neighbors and all who knew him, knew how much of a hard worker he was. Sonny loved action/kung-fu movies and in his spare time, he enjoyed being a proud grandfather. He has joined into the afterlife with his daughter, Victoria Oliver; two wives, Florence Burnette and Janie Owens. He is survived by his daughters, Gwendolyn Anderson, her husband, Leonard Anderson of Columbia, SC, and Marva Burnette, her fiancé, Davon Wright of Goose Creek, SC; his son, James Thomas and his wife, Toni Thomas-Owens of May Landing, NJ; and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to thank Tidewater Hospice and Agape Hospice House.
