Obituary of William E. Mangum

BETHUNE - Funeral service with military honors for William Eugene Mangum, 78, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Timrod Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. David Robinson will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kershaw County. Mr. Mangum, husband of the late Cacilia Hahn Mangum, died Sunday, August 3, 2008. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late William Richard Mangum and Virginia Carolyn Hammond Walchek. He joined the United States Army at the age of 16 where he obtained his high school diploma from the Army Education Center. He was a combat medic LPN. He retired from the Army as a Sergeant First Class. During his tour of duty he served in WW II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He received a Bronze Star, the WW II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal. He was a member of Timrod Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed coin collecting. Surviving are children, Kathleen (David) Skinner of Rutherfordton, N.C., Patricia Pierce of Lugoff, Virginia (Harold) Adams of Lugoff, William (Dina) Mangum Jr. of Columbia, Richard (Lorri) Mangum of Seminole, Okla., John (Ginger) Mangum of Bethune, and Sarah (Paul) Odom of Camden; sister, Naomi Moye of Columbia; 23 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by step-parents, Ruby Mangum and Jack Walchek.
