ELGIN – Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Dennis Allen Welborn, 68, on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the C. M. Tucker Jr. Nursing Care Center. Dennis died Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Dennis was a loving husband, extraordinary father, devoted friend and trusted confidant. Dennis was always willing to lend a helpful hand. He was loyal and dependable. Dennis was always there, but never in the way. Born in Winston Salem, N.C., he was a son of the late Fred Preston and Betty Jane Stamey Welborn. Dennis retired from the U.S. Army as a Calvary Scout and served in Vietnam. Dennis received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star Valor Device. He was an Army Ranger, a member of the Elgin VFW and the Abate Motorcycle Association. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Marianne Kohl Welborn; Kathi Gortman (Derrick) of Welcome, N.C., David Welborn (Kathy) of Pensacola, FL; a brother, Michael Welborn of Walkertown, N.C.; and grandchildren, Sara Armstrong, Hollie Gortman, and Brandon Welborn.
