Obituary of Paul L. Grooms
ELGIN - Funeral service for Paul L. Grooms, 80, will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Ken Jackson, Rev. John Corder and Rev. Bill Drees will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Town of Elgin Library Building Fund, PO Box 277, Elgin, S.C. 29045.
Mr. Grooms died Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late William M. and Lila Brown Grooms. A veteran of the United States Army, he served in the Korean Conflict where he received a Purple Heart. He retired from the Civil Service at Fort Jackson and served on the City Council for the Town of Elgin. He served as Mayor for the Town of Elgin from 1994 to 2007.
Mr. Grooms was a volunteer fireman and former fire chief with the Blaney Fire Department and was a former Little League baseball coach. He was a USC Gamecock and New York Yankee’s fan, and enjoyed NASCAR. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Willie Viola Grooms; son, William Bruce Grooms; daughter, Alice Close; brother, Don Grooms; sisters, Louise Hite and Ann Cobb; grandchildren, Stephanie Gillian, Aimee Boone, Carrie Grooms, Samantha Grooms, Zachary Close, Cody Grooms, Stacia Grooms, Kadee Hodge and Austin Close; great-grandchildren, Ellie Gillian, Jacob Watson, Maylee Boone, Sydney Gillian, Bowden Boone, and Jada and Amaya Rhodes. He was predeceased by a son, Paul L. Grooms, Jr.; grandson, Dustin Grooms; brothers, Oren Grooms, Grady Grooms and Glenn Brown; and sisters, Nora Outlaw, Leila Vaughn, and Leolis Harris.
