CAMDEN - Funeral Mass for Be Be Roukos Bailey, 87, will be celebrated Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be in Quaker Cemetery. Father Francis Travis will officiate. Pallbearers will be Fred Sheheen, Bob Sheheen, Austin Sheheen, James Collins, Jack Rozier and Ian Tyson. The rosary will be recited on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8:30 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601. Mrs. Bailey, wife of the late Raymond Haynes Bailey, died Monday, November 17, 2008. Born in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late Farajallah "Fred" Roukos and Labiby Roukos. Mrs. Bailey was an entrepreneur having owned and operated House Mart of Décor, The Wheaton News, and the Cheese and Wine Shoppe, all in Wheaton, Md. Upon moving to South Carolina, she opened Subs & Such and also owned Bailey’s Auction. Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Business and Professional Women, serving as President of her local club in Wheaton and moved on to become President of the Maryland Federation of BPW Clubs. She was a Past President of the Wheaton-Kensington Chamber of Commerce, Past President of Women’s Political Caucus and Past President of New Century Democrats. She is a Past President of the Montgomery County Press Association. She was the first woman to receive the Wheaton Chamber's Outstanding Service Award. She was the first female president of the Wheaton Retail Merchant's Association. Mrs. Bailey had an avid interest in community issues. Women's interests were of special importance to her. She was appointed to the Maryland Governor's Commission on Women. She worked for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. Mrs. Bailey's efforts helped shape the introduction of the Metro subway to the Wheaton area and played an important role in the revitalization of the downtown area. She remained active in politics as an organizer on numerous campaigns, finally running for the Maryland State House of Representatives herself. After moving to Camden, South Carolina she served as Chairperson of the Kershaw County Democratic Party. She was recognized for her community efforts by numerous civic and charitable organizations. Surviving are her daughters, Deborah Bailey and her husband, Bill Rozier of Lugoff, and Margarette Bailey-Tyson and her husband, Ian of Lugoff; 3 grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Robert Roukos and Fred Roukos; and sisters, Margarette Simpson, Lucille Sheheen and Marie Marshá.
