Obituary of Rilla Mae McKay

LUGOFF - Mrs. Rilla Mae Watford McKay, 78, died Sunday, December 14, 2008. Born in Darlington County, she was the daughter of the late Berry and Minnie Matthews Watford, and the widow of the late Charlie Junior McKay. Mrs. McKay was an accomplished musician, and her favorite instruments were the piano, organ and the guitar, which she loved the best. Her favorite music was gospel, and she sang with several professional gospel groups around the state and in Wilmington, N.C. Mrs. McKay and her late husband Charlie moved to Lugoff in 1956 for his employment with DuPont. She considers herself a native of Lugoff. Mrs. McKay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Charles L. McKay, daughter, Brenda Baker; sisters, Janie Reddick, Madie McCutcheon, Dorothy Munn, Eloise Calhoun, Evelyn Calamita, and Elizabeth Oliver; and a brother, John Watford. Surviving are sons, Roger (Margaret) McKay of Lugoff, and Barry LaGrand (Tamara) McKay of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Virginia Wright of Lamar; grandchildren, Chris McKay, Missy Padgett, Benji McKay, Roger McKay, Jr., Sherry Sulzer, and Tarron McKay; great-grandchildren, Nichole Griffin, Robbie Griffin, McKayla Padgett, Quade McKay, Jenna Sulzer, and Abby Sulzer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Camden. The Rev. Tim Shirley will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home in Columbia or the Kershaw County Historical Society. The family expresses great appreciation to Dr. William Babcock and the staff of Oncology at Kershaw County Medical Center, Dr. Tallulah Holmstrom, and Hospice of Tri County for their loving care.
