Obituary of Reba J Cheek

Reba Johnson Cheek, 96, of Goldston, N.C., passed away on April 12, 2009, at the Karesh Long Term Care Center in Camden, S.C. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17 at Goldston United Methodist Church, 185 Hillcrest Avenue, Goldston, N.C. with the Rev. Thomas A. Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will be in the family plot in the Goldston Cemetery. Powers Funeral Home is assisting. Mrs. Cheek was born in Goldston on September 5, 1912, the daughter of the late Joseph Daniel and Sallie Lawrence Moses Johnson. A devoted wife and mother, she was married to the late Samuel Cheek for 64 years, married Sept. 7, 1935. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Emma J. White of Sanford, Mildred J. Moses of Sanford and Elva J. Butler of Pittsboro; four brothers, T.M. Johnson and Wilbur Johnson of Raleigh, Quay Johnson of Garner, and Hubert Johnson of Goldston; and son-in-law, Hugh Searcy of Forest City. Mrs. Cheek has been a member of Goldston United Methodist Church since 1923 and was active in many of the church activities, including the United Methodist Women. She joined The Goldston Woman’s Club in 1936. She was a member of The Winnie Davis Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy in which she was a Real Granddaughter; The James Moore Chapter, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century; The Alfred Moore Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; The Chatham County Historical Society, Girl Scout Leader, and Friends of the Library. She was a graduate of Goldston High School. Mrs. Cheek was interested in arts and crafts, music, genealogy and helping others, but most of all she had an abiding love for her family. She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Cheek Searcy, of Asheville, N.C.; son, Samuel Johnson Cheek, and wife, Nancy, of Camden, S.C.; four grandchildren, Martha Truitt and husband, John, of Biltmore Lake, N.C., Becky Duncan and husband, Mike, of Clifton, VA, John Cheek and wife, Michele, of Greer, S.C., Sallie Harrell and husband, Chris, of Columbia, S.C; great-grandchildren, Katie Truitt, Madison and Matthew Duncan, Noah and Joshua Cheek; sister, Josephine J. Myers, of Candor, N.C.; sister-in-law, Beverly F. Johnson, of Willow Springs, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to The Goldston United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
