RIDGEWAY- Funeral service for Richard Michael Spiegel, 62, will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Sawney’s Creek Baptist Church, Ridgeway, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Evan Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. Memorials may be made to Sawney’s Creek Baptist Church or to the South Carolina Oncology Associates, 166 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29210. Mr. Spiegel died Wednesday, April 29, 2009. Born in Decatur, Ind., he was a son of Catherine L. Teeple Spiegel and the late Robert Maurice Spiegel. He was a Vietnam veteran having served in the United States Air Force. He received his Associates Degree from Central Carolina and worked for Civil Service. Mr. Spiegel was a member of Sawney’s Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing. Surviving are his wife, Brenda C. Spiegel; sons, Richard Michael (Ginnie) Spiegel, Jr. of Sumter, and Matthew W. Spiegel of Sumter; daughters, Christine (Michael) Gainous of Sumter, and Joyce (Ben) Brown of Sumter; step-son, Casey (Danielle) Hagen of Mechanicsville, Va.; brother, Robert Spiegel of Sumter; sisters, Patricia (Rick) Grouowski of Spokane, Wash., Sharon Smith of Dalzell, Cindy (Craig) Shuman of Boston, Mass., and Cathy (Mike) Carlson of Boston, Mass.; and 7 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Spiegel. The family expresses great appreciation to Dr. William Butler, Dusty, Anne, and Denise and the entire staff of South Carolina Oncology Associates, and Amy Schofield, RN of Palmetto Health Richland.
