Mr. McGaha died May 5, 2009 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Greenwood, he was a son of John L. and Frances McGaha. He retired in 1999 from the SC Law Enforcement Division after serving 26 years in various public service agencies including the SC Highway Patrol, SC Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, Department of Public Safety, and SLED. The retirement years that followed allowed him to discover new talents. He enjoyed video and still photography, especially photographing landscapes. In 2005, he wrote a gospel song, “With You as My Master” and the following year he custom-built a banjo. He loved being a Grandpa (“Sugar”) and valued the time spent with his three grandchildren.
Mr. McGaha was a member of First Baptist Church, Camden, and former member of Malvern Hill Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and sound technician.
Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Carolyn Bernard McGaha; daughter Amy West of Lugoff, and daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Larry Bowers, Jr. of Lugoff; the three greatest loves of his life, his grandchildren, Cooper Everett Bowers, Reese Cameron West, and Caroline Elizabeth Bowers; his parents of Camden, formerly of Ware Shoals; brother Jim (Patsy) Sweatt of Anderson, sister Betty (Troy) Holleman of Denver, NC, brother John (Ann) McGaha of Fort Mill; in-laws Garland and Nell Bernard of Pamplico; sister-in-law Cynthia (Frank) Munn of Pamplico; seven nephews and one niece.
