Obituary of James Stell Daniel
CSM James Stell Daniel, USA retired, marched victoriously from the battlefield of this life to his Heavenly home above to live eternally with his Lord and Savior on Monday, August 17, 2009. He was joyfully greeted on the other side by loved ones who have gone before him: his devoted wife of 62 years, Dorothy Hendon Daniel, his two sons, James R. Daniel and Robert D. Daniel, as well as his parents, James Andrew Daniel and Margaret ‘Maggie’ Elizabeth Heflin Daniel. Those who celebrate his home going and look forward to being reunited with him in eternity are his daughter, Myra, and son-in-law, H. T. Morgan, of Elgin, SC, and daughter-in-law, Jan Daniel, of Plano, TX; sisters, Faith Harris of Franklin, NC, and Dorothy Newton of LaGrange, GA; three grandchildren: Mike Daniel and his wife Marti of Murphy, TX; Tommy Morgan and his wife Angie of Lugoff, SC, and Jami Paquette and her husband Christian of Ft. Wainwright, AK; as well as six great-grandchildren: Claire Daniel; Abby, Whitt, and Quinn Morgan; and Alexander and Spencer Paquette.
He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the bounty of his labor with all those near and dear to him - not only his family, but his church family and neighbors, as well. Many are those who can recount the blessing of fresh summer vegetables grown by the sweat of his brow. In typical “James Daniel” fashion, the harvest was always abundant, for he planted by his philosophy of, “If a little does a little good, a lot will do a lot of good”.
As a passionate and committed Christian, he delighted in worshipping at Lugoff First Baptist Church where the highlight of his week was Pastor Greg’s weekly sermons.
He served his country faithfully for 30 years in the United States Army and was committed to defending and protecting the freedom of those he loved. He was a highly decorated veteran of three wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam conflict, where he served two tours of duty. After retiring from the military he answered God’s call and became an Ordained Minister of the Gospel, serving in whatever capacity and location the Lord led. He was faithful to his calling to the end of this earthly life, ministering to those who were caring for him during his failing health. His presence among us will be greatly missed, but his memory will abide with us and inspire each of us for the remainder of our natural lives.
Services for CSM James S. Daniel, USA retired, will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Lugoff First Baptist Church, 106 Longtown Rd., Lugoff, S.C. with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia. Visitation will be held at Powers Funeral Home on Friday evening, August 21, 2009, from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to either Lugoff First Baptist Church Building Fund or The Gideons International.
