LUGOFF – Funeral service for James Franklin Baker, 75, will be held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at El-Bethel Faith Community Church with burial to follow in Providence Baptist Church, Cassatt. Rev. Joe Stines and Rev. Donnie Barrett will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Mr. Baker died Monday, June 27, 2011. Born in Kershaw, he was the son of the late Joseph Darling and Theola Baker Stevens. He served as Deacon in three churches in the community. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Ruth Garrison Baker; daughters, Velvet Baker Gantt (Colie) of Lugoff and Valerie Baker Newman (David) of Lugoff; brothers, Joseph “J.D.” Baker; sisters, Louise Baker Thompson and Minnie Baker Thompson; and grandchildren, Christina Gantt, Greg Newman, Amanda Sanderson, Steven Sanderson, and Christopher Newman. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry William Baker.
