LUGOFF – A celebration of life service for Joseph Willis “Joey” Dorton, Jr., 46, will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Lugoff First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Springvale Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Todd Horton will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday 5-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. Joey died Wednesday, August 01, 2012. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Joseph Willis Dorton Sr. and Barbara Harris Dorton. He retired from the South Carolina Highway Patrol and was a local entrepreneur. He was currently serving on the Kershaw County School Board and was the former Chairman of the Board. Joey was very active in community events and coached football and baseball for the Kershaw County Recreation Department for 14 years. He was a past member of the Optimist Club and a current member of the Lugoff-Elgin ABLE Club. He enjoyed reading, gardening and sports. Joey was a devoted husband and father. His greatest joy came from spending time with his sons and his wife. They were the most important things in his life and his entire world revolved around them. Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Mitzi Mickle Dorton; sons, Joseph Willis “Will” Dorton, III student at the College of Charleston, and Justin Mickle Dorton of the home; parents, Joe and Barbara Dorton of Elgin; sisters, Theresa “Terri” McManus (Wayne) of Rembert and Elizabeth Dorton Starling (Jerry Lee) of Elgin; and father and mother-in-law, Willie and Roetta Mickle of Lake Wateree.
