Obituary of Alma Newman Hilton
BETHUNE – Service to celebrate the life of Alma Newman Hilton, 95, will be held Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Timrod Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. James Wallace and the Rev. David Robinson will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday 1:30-3:00 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship building. Memorials may be made to Timrod Baptist Church, 4227 Timrod Road, Bethune, S.C. 29009.
Mrs. Hilton, wife of the late Floyd Hilton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 05, 2012 after a long illness. Born in Kershaw County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late William Charles and Lottie Dixon Newman. She spent 33 years in Charlotte, N.C. where she attended the First Baptist Church. She was a member of Timrod Baptist Church in Bethune and the Goldenrods of Timrod. She enjoyed cooking and most of all spending time with her family.
Surviving are her daughter, Jacqueline “Jackie” Hagwood (James) of Bethune and Sumter; brothers, Grady Newman, Roy Newman, James D. Newman, Nelson Newman, and Bill Newman, all of Bethune; sisters, Elaine Hartis and Helen Catoe, both of Bethune grandchildren, James Hagwood Jr. (Lisa) of Matthews, N.C. and Steven H. Hagwood (Kim) of Irmo; great-grandchildren, Ashley Eckel (Myles), Erin Brodd (Kyle), Elizabeth Hagwood, and A.J. Hagwood; and step great-grandson, Drew Farr. She was predeceased by her step-mother, Nannie McCaskill Newman; brothers, Heyward Newman, Boyd Newman, and Cecil “Buster” Newman; and sisters, Susie Mae Newman McGee and Sarah N. Anderson.
The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to all of Mrs. Hilton’s caregivers, the nursing staff and their assistants at KershawHealth, Med II, and a special thanks to Dr. Holmstrom, who has provided exceptional care over the years and to Dr. Olatosi and Dr. Mattar for their assistance during her last hospitalization.
