Sorry I’m late but just saw this. I graduated Camden High in 1986 and went on to serve 20 years and retire from the Army because of this gentleman. Rest in heaven 1SG.

Johnny was in school with me at Altamahaw-Ossipee and he made every effort to attend high school reunions of the Class of 61. He was well respected by all his class mates and his efforts to attend his last reunion in the summer of 2019 were much appreciated by all of us there. I just learned of Johnny's passing because of a reunion picture of Johnny that Archie Gaster, a classmate posted on Facebook a few days ago. Johnny's sister advised Archie of his passing. I have many reunion pictures in case any of his family is interested. Johnny was truly a leader who made an enormous contribution to our nation and he will be missed. Eddie Hopkins

1SG was one of the best men I've ever known. He was my JROTC instructor from 1990-1994. He was more than a teacher. He treated us like his own children. His impact on my life is long lasting. His encouragement gave me a confidence I never had before. He and the JROTC program gave me the gift of self-worth. I can only hope to be half the teacher he was. I miss you and I only hope to make you proud. Hope

Not a Fourth of July went by without a kind word, a smile, and a hug from this sweet man! He glowed with Love! Heaven gained a special angel.

EVERYTHING I learned about being a leader of people. 1SG(Ret) Hicks taught me. He planted the seeds of being responsible for the well being of those that you serve and their respect for you will last a lifetime. Thank you for your service to our country and to us your students. Until we meet again in Valhalla, may your mead cup ever be full, Top. Rangers lead the way!!!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I had the honor of being one of his cadets at Camden High School. He was more than a teacher. He treated us like his own. My name is Stephanie but he affectionately called me Sue. A name I answered to with pride all four years of high school. Take your rest First. We love you and miss you.
