LUGOFF, SC Woodie Lynn Smith, 85, passed away on January 30, 2021. He was born to Adelle and Woodrow Wilson Smith on April 5, 1935, in Duplin County, North Carolina.
At the age of 6, Woodie and his 2 younger brothers entered Barium Springs Orphanage - A Home for Children located in Statesville, NC. This became Woodie’s new home until he graduated high school in 1955. Woodie loved his “Barium family” and often spoke fondly about the happy years he spent there.
After graduation, Woodie put his gifted mechanical mind to work. He obtained a highly sought-after position with NCR, in Miami, Florida, repairing cash registers. He spent the rest of his career as a highly respected field engineer and years later, when he left NCR, he became a founding business partner at Sentry Cash Register in Danville, Virginia.
Woodie exhibited his mechanical talents, even as a child. He enjoyed building things, and often would take things apart “just to see what made them tick.” He loved anything to do with nature, and especially enjoyed fishing, hunting and birdwatching. He also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling or laughing at a good joke or story.
