Obituary of Shirley McConnaughhay
Shirley McFalls McConnaughhay, 84 of Elgin, died peacefully Friday July 9, 2021. She was born in Roanoke, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Henry S. and Lucille Snelling McFalls. Shirley is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Joe E. McConnaughhay of 65 years. She was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church.
Shirley graduated from high school in Roanoke, Virginia, and she graduated from El Paso Technical College, El Paso, Texas in 1955. She enjoyed working for Belk at Columbia Place Mall for 26 years and retired in 2005.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother and sister, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed volunteering her time at her church helping in the Nursery and with Summer Vacation Bible School. She delighted in spending time outside working with her flowers, and enjoyed crocheting, baking, and traveling.
Shirley is survived by her children, Larry McConnaughhay (Christen) of Batesburg and, Billy McConnaughhay (Sherry) of Camden; grandchildren, Adam McConnaughhay (Susana) of Colombia, S. Am., Lara M. McEachern (Maxwell) of Columbia, Elizabeth M. Roe (Jacob) of Myrtle Beach, Jacob Ring (Kaylin) of Chapin, and Zachery Lynch (Autumn) of Columbia; and a sister-in-law, Sarah E. McFalls of Milford, DE; and two nieces.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a beloved brother, Harry P. McFalls, a United States Army Special Forces Green Beret soldier recognized for extraordinary heroism.
The family will receive friends at Smyrna United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 17, 2021, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. prior to the service. A memorial service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Smyrna United Methodist Church, Elgin, with burial to follow in the Greenhaven Memorial Gardens, Elgin, SC.
