Obituary of Billy J. McConnaughhay
Camden-Billy J. McConnaughhay, 60, of Camden, passed away Monday, August 23, 2021. Born in Fort Gordon, Georgia, he was a son of Joseph Earvle and the late Shirley McFalls McConnaughhay. Billy is survived by his wife, Sherry Jones McConnaughhay of 33 years. Billy attended the Christian Life Assemblies of God Church in Seven Oaks, Columbia, South Carolina.
Billy graduated from Spring Valley High School, in Columbia, South Carolina, and he graduated from Midlands Technical College in 1982 in Columbia, South Carolina. After entering into a management career as a Service Manager in the automobile business, Billy continued to advance in his profession by becoming certified in Finance at the General Motors University of Management, Atlanta, Georgia, and in Computer Technology at the Management Training Center, Dayton, Ohio, along with many other numerous business training programs through the years. Billy went on to have many professional honors, awards, and recognitions. He had many successful years in the automobile business. He worked in the Hartsville-Florence areas, with Newsome Raceway, Hartsville, SC, and Newsome Imports of Florence, Florence, SC, and Quality Auto Sales, Hartsville, SC. His leadership ability affected the lives of family and business relationships. Billy was known for his willingness to go alongside others on any task when needed, not minding hard work, and not putting himself above others.
Billy had earned many sports awards and trophies growing up, and he always excelled as a team player at whatever he did throughout his life. Billy always had an enduring, reminiscent love of his time playing football through his high school years at Spring Valley High School, and was a football team enthusiast of his brother’s alma mater, USC.
Billy enjoyed freshwater and deep sea fishing, and recreational boating. He took pleasure in taking animal pictures in the wild, and had been a supporter of the Riverbank Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina. Some of his fond memories of him and his wife's life were of their Hawaii travels, which was a subject where he always had adventurous stories to tell about their experiences. He was also a history buff, and he had great satisfaction in conversations relating to his interest, and his hobbies. Billy enjoyed playing saxophone, and he enjoyed listening to saxophone music. Billy was known for his diversity of engaging in almost any subject knowledgeably, and also for his easy going, likeable personality.
Billy was a devoted husband, son, brother, and friend. Billy loved his family's two horses, Lady and Sugar, and their Lab, Sarge, and his very most special pets were their tuxedo cat, Beauregard(Beau), and their Siamese cat, Boots(BooBoo).
In addition to his wife, Billy is survived by his father, Joseph Earvle McConnaughhay; a brother, Larry L. McConnaughhay and his wife, Christen, of Columbia; a brother-in-law, W. Michael Jones, Sr. and his wife Pam H., of Camden; three nephews, Adam M. McConnaughhay and his wife Susana, of Colombia, S.Am., Jacob Ring and his wife Kaylin of Chapin, and Zackery Lynch and his wife Autumn of Columbia; three nieces, Renee J. Sanders and her husband Shane of Camden, Lara M. McEachern and her husband Maxwell of Columbia, Elizabeth M. Roe and her husband Jacob of Myrtle Beach; aunts, Sarah E. McFalls, of Milford, DE, and Marilyn Segnari, of Roanoke, VA; uncles, Clifton McConnaughhay, of Eunice, MO, and Jimmy McConnaughhay, of Rolla, MO; and many cousins.
In addition to his mother, Billy was predeceased by his uncles, Harry P. McFalls, and George Segnari; a nephew, William M. Jones, Jr.
The family will receive friends Friday, September 3, 2021 from 11 to 12 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff, S.C.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate his life will be held at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with burial following in Quaker Cemetery, Camden, S.C. The Rev. Taylor Wells will officiate.
