For Ray’s dear family, I know how all of you will miss him and rest in faith that we’ll all be together again one day in the love of God.
My friendship with Ray started when we were both in our 70’s after Shelby died. We spent a lot of time together. During those years, if you saw one you usually saw the other.
In all the years I knew him I never heard him brag about anything. He confided in me the stories about how he grew up, how he got things done, the places he’d been, the people he knew, the challenges he’d overcome, very personal things but he never told me the same thing twice.
Remembering what you tell somebody is a gift and Ray had it with me. When he told someone a story I had heard before, it just made me feel special that I knew the ending.
I never heard him say a mean word and I never saw him treat anyone without respect. I never met anyone who didn’t like him.
Ray knew what everything cost and he saw value everywhere. He would abruptly stop on the interstate and retrieve the top of a cooler blown off a truck - I’m sure he had the bottom stored in a warehouse somewhere. Ray saw all the things you and I often overlook.
Ray liked a good joke and he was delighted when he got one over on me. For many years I would leave my office in town after work and he would have the back door to his office in Lugoff open just a crack waiting for me.
My preference was Crown Royal and Ginger Ale. Ray knew to the penny what it cost and one day, he asked me “Joe, you really recognize the taste of Crown Royal, don’t you?” You know, I was a little puffed up about it and then Ray said “Well, you’ve been drinking Canadian Mist here for a year!” He had the date written down the day he doctored the bottle. Of course, I didn’t care because he got such a kick out of fooling me.
Laugh, lord he could laugh and made me laugh and he wrote down, everything ! When he chewed RED MAN he recorded the date he opened the pack and then the date he got the last chew out of it
He did the same thing when he decided to wean himself off whiskey every drink every day every hour it would go in the book. When it got too much for him he would listen to me to tell him the truth about getting help and he never faulted me for it.
Ray was my friend and when he found Patsy and they fell in love, I was proud to be his best man.
Earlier when I asked Ray where he found her, he smiled and said “In the IGA parking lot!”
That was C.Ray Miles, God knows I loved that man. I’ll see you Ray, probably sooner than later.

The Porter and Miles families were neighbors and good friends and consequently C. Ray and I became good friends while growing up. He was always a hard worker, and I remember one of his early jobs was delivering The State Sunday newspaper throughout the county. On several occasions, I would ride with C. Ray in his Model A to make the rounds. On many occasions, this became quite interesting as the Model A had either one-wheel brakes or no brakes. C. Ray was an excellent driver and as I look back, I often wonder why he didn't try dirt track racing. He was more than a good friend and, as I fondly remember some of our situations, one in particular when he purchased a brand-new Moped bike and he soon found out I really needed to test ride. Well, this took place while my parents went to town and left me in charge of the store, and C. Ray shows up to let me take a ride. Low and behold my parents forgot something and turned around to come back and I passed them flying in the breeze. This did not come out very well!
On a serious note, his Obituary does indeed list a summary of many important things. C. Ray knew what real friendship meant and the times we visited, whether one month or one year, the friendship never had to be refreshed. Our visits always would up with firm handshakes and a smile. I always felt better afterward than when I arrived. To my knowledge, he never abandoned the real values in life.
I feel blessed and fortunate to have experienced this friendship. He will be sorely missed. May God continue to bless and comfort the family and friends as we mourn this loss.

I was sorry to hear about Ray's passing. He was a friend of the Jordan families since the 1960's. One of Ray's first construction projects was building catch basins for the SCDOT where he would bring everything needed to the site and finish very quickly and very efficiently. He was always trying to find ways to complete the SCDOT projects quicker and less expense for everyone. As stated in his obituary, he was very intelligent and was a very hard worker.

I met Ray Miles in the early 80's. He was without a doubt one of the smartest men I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I would ask him what I thought was a simple question and was always amazed at how much he knew about that subject. I came to know over the years he knew a lot about a lot of things. I also was able to witness first hand the marriage he had to Ms. Shelby. It was very obvious what a great team they made. And a great team they were. I also remember never seeing them argue.
Ray was the ultimate family man. Always putting his family first. He and Ms. Shelby raised three of the finest people I have ever known and that doesn't happen by accident.
Ray loved guns, knives and loved to drive fast when conditions allowed. He was a mans man. I loved picking his brain knowing I would pick something up I didn't know.
I can say without reservation that Ray Miles was one of the finest men I've ever known. I will miss him but knowing where he is I also know I will see him again.
