Obituary of Joseph Raleigh Chavis, Sr.
Joseph “Joe” Raleigh Chavis Sr., 76, of Camden passed away peacefully from a short diagnosis of Glioblastoma at MUSC Health Kershaw Hospice on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. Joe was born November 16th, 1946, on Sullivan’s Island, SC, he was the son of the late Clinton Leon Chavis and Louise Tanner Chavis Parry of Camden, SC.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra (Sandy) Morrow Chavis of over 53 years; son, Joseph Raleigh Chavis Jr. (Amber) of Mobile, AL and daughter, Tracey Chavis Hunt (David) of Camden, SC; grandsons, Austin Chavis (Kortney) and Grayson Chavis of Mobile, AL, William Hunt of Camden, SC; great granddaughter, Ansleigh Chavis, arriving soon in Mobile, AL; sister, Carolyn Chavis Phillips of Cayce, SC. Joe was predeceased by sisters, Martha Joan Connell, Audrey L. Miller, Helen C. Ray and brother Clinton Leon Chavis Jr.
He is a Christian and now celebrating heaven with no pains or sorrows. He loved his wife more than anything in this world. Joe was a devoted husband and father, and thoroughly enjoyed being a grandfather. He also loved to spend quality time with family, especially his children and grandchildren. If he could travel to any special place, it would be Edisto, SC where he married his true soul mate and spent many summers with family. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid Clemson fan. Joe loved to take care of his garden and would give vegetables to everyone. He will be forever known for having a giving heart. He worked for DuPont and Invista for over 56 years. He was also the owner of Camden Chimney Sweep for 30 years. He served with the South Carolina Army National Guard. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Camden. He was a graduate of Camden High School class of 1964 and loved to watch or hear any Bulldog sport being played. He also loved his cat Fred who was always at his side.
Visitation will be held at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff, SC, on Saturday, August 5, 2023 from 2-4pm. A private service will be held at a later date.
