Obituary of Richard Leon Hoopengardner
Richard Leon Hoopengardner, 84, of Camden, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023. Born in Berkeley Springs, WV, he was the son of the late James Luther and Wava Corbett Hoopengardner and the husband of Jean Tolbert Hoopengardner. Richard was a US Air Force veteran and a longtime member of Hermitage Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon. He loved gardening, fishing, and was an avid USC Gamecock fan. Above all, Richard loved his family and was a very proud father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his daughters, Christine Y. Hoopengardner and Wanda H. Hein (Jeff); his grandchildren, Justin R. Putnam (Cydney), Lane Hein, and Cade Hein; a great-granddaughter on the way, Miller Jo Putnam; and his siblings, Lois Joy, Shirley Garner (Ted), David Hoopengardner (Kathy), and Jimmy Hoopengardner.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa H. Putnam; and siblings, Patricia Hawvermale and Gary Hoopengardner.
Funeral Services will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Hermitage Baptist Church, Camden, officiated by Rev. Mark Hopkins. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 2:00pm. Burial with military honors will be held at 9:00am on Thursday, November 30, 2023, in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia.
