To Becky, Butch and Dina I extend my heartfelt sympathy. You may not remember me, but Dwight was a major influence on my life. He hired me as basketball coach at Wildwood in 1967, but because of his friendship and influence I soon changed my emphasis to football. When he moved to Cocoa as head coach he brought me along as an assistant coach. When I became a head coach, I always took a little of Dwight Maples with me. He was a major part of my success as not only a coach, but as a person. One of my best memories of Dwight was in "67 when we drove to Birmingham for the Iron Bowl (the one Stabler helped win by a long td run in the mud. Believe it or not we spent much of the trip singing together. I even remember the song that we sang most of the way, "Memories are Made of This"
God bless Dwight and may he give you peach and great memories.

Hello to the Maples family,
So sad to read this news about Dr. Maples. I remember he and Mrs. Maples very fondly. I think of Mrs. Maples often as she was my most favorite teacher. I'm a middle school teacher now and wonder how she had that very special way about her. And Dr. Maples was just a great guy who loved, loved, loved football. (which he passed on to Butch - who I never saw when he wasn't drawing football plays on paper - x's and o's!) Miss you all and hope all of the wonderful memories you have of your daddy and husband will carry you through.

I really enjoyed our times together as a student at Wildwood and actually coached against Coach Maples when he was at Williston ( I think he even won then) but a great man and a great person and the world will miss him.... He is probably in heaven asking where he can get a cup of coffee. Will miss you.

I knew Dr. Maples as Coach Maples when he taught at Wildwood (FL) High School. He was my American History teacher in my Senior year and had a unique way of making history come alive. He also "adopted" me on our senior trip to the New York World's Fair by moving me to his group thus ensuring the wonderful experience I had during that time.
I thought several times of writing Coach Maples to let him know how much he had positively impacted my life, but never did. I was hoping to tell him at the gathering to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the graduation of the Wildwood High School class of 1964, but he was unable to attend.
So I am taking this opportunity to let his family know that he was beloved by me-and our class. He was truly a special man and excellent teacher.
My condolences and sympathy to all the family and friends who loved Dr. Maples.
