Obituary of Verlie McAvoy
Lugoff – funeral service for Verlie Marie Stepp McAvoy, 75, will be held on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with burial to follow in Lugoff First Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Charles Everett and the Rev. David Robinson will officiate. The family will receive friends Monday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children – Greenville, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605.
Mrs. McAvoy went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 16, 2014. Born in Inez, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Laura Tipton Stepp. She had worked for the State of Ohio and most recently South Carolina DHEC in Columbia.
Verlie loved her flowers, the songbirds that graced her yard, her cats, cooking for the family and reading. She also loved Trinity Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School Class.
Verlie was a caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, Darrell W. McAvoy Sr.; sons, Darrell McAvoy Jr. of Elgin, Dennis McAvoy (Karen) of Lugoff, Eric McAvoy (Teresa) of Lugoff and Emmanuel McAvoy (Greta) of Lugoff; daughters, Kamela Clackum (Chris) of Lugoff and Melinda Hall (Larry) of Lugoff; brothers, Charles Stepp of Columbia and Watson Stepp (Sue) of Arizona; sisters, Bonnie Tyner (Frank) of Ohio and Vickie Aldridge (Vic) of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Richard Carroll Stepp, Mermon Stepp and Melvin Stepp Jr.; and sisters, Anna M. Cooke, Rebecca Neal, Mary Elizabeth Stepp and Pat Alger-Benson.
