ELGIN – After battling Leukemia for over a year and a half, Debra “Debbie” Lynn Summers, 59, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on September 16, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Sally Bourgoin and survived by siblings Louann Ward (William), Ralph Bourgoin (Nancy) and Phillip Bourgoin. Born February 13, 1955, in Shirley, Massachusetts, she lived a few years overseas in France while her father was stationed with the US Army, afterwards moving to Columbia, S.C., where she grew up. She graduated in 1973 from Spring Valley High School and then became an accomplished hair stylist. In 1981 she met and married Gregory Summers and together they had a daughter, Jamie Cie, married to Charles Joseph “CJ” Carnaggio III. From Greg’s former marriage there were two sons she loved as her own, Clayton Gregory Summers, who is married to Stacey Lynelle Summers, and Rodney Joseph Summers, married to Tina Lynn Summers. Debbie was great when it came to all sorts of sewing and crafts. Many of the family and friends have articles of clothing and Christmas gifts made by her hands. She even painted landscapes and worked for awhile as a floral designer. She and Greg loved to travel having taken 14 cruises together. Gardening was another pastime enjoyed by Debbie. She enjoyed her 8 grandchildren; Loren Mackenzie Summers, Vance Joseph Summers, Thomas Clayton Summers, Bryce Hayden Summers, Charles Joseph Carnaggio IV, Ella Grace Summers, Chandler Jayden Carnaggio, and Chasey AnLynn Carnaggio. On February 28, 1999, Debbie accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at Harvest Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school class secretary and AWANA Cubbies secretary year after year. Debbie will always be remembered for her giving, loving nature, never offending anyone and always having a kind word to say about everyone. Her biggest disappointment was that she left not having been able to see her grandchildren grow older and marry. One of the many accomplishments she is most proud of was to have known a cousin she never physically met, Rebecca Halloran of Valkaria, Florida, that had the same disease at the same time and sharing the experiences of battling this terrible disease. To date Rebecca has been cancer free for over a year. Funeral services will be as follows, a visitation will be held at Powers Funeral Home on Friday from 6-8 p.m. On Saturday at 4:00 p.m., services celebrating her life will be held at Harvest Baptist Church in Lugoff, S.C., located at 281 Wildwood Lane, followed by graveside services at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens located at 1102 Two Notch Rd, Elgin, S.C. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be men from the Faith Builders Sunday School class. Memorials may be given to Harvest Baptist Church where funds will be used to support missionaries spreading the Gospel around the world. She and her family wish to thank all those at Duke University Hospital for their caring support during her illness and to the church family at Harvest Baptist Church for their prayers and support throughout her lifetime.
