Obituary of Jimmie McRay Cherry
LUGOFF – Funeral services for Jimmie McRay Cherry, 85, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Worship Center, with burial to follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project.
Mr. Cherry passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014. Born in Winnsboro, he was a son of the late James Samuel and Lessie Gunter Cherry. Mr. Cherry retired from the U.S. Army where he served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, the Elks Lodge, and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed golfing, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Maude Branham Cherry; son, Jimmy Cherry (Cathy); daughters, Debra Sellers (Ronald), Cheryl Buford (Les), Melissa Johnson (Glenn); brother, Larry Cherry (Eldis); 17 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Artie Cherry; brothers, Teddy, Kenneth, and P.A. Cherry; and a sister, Mildred Cherry.
