BETHUNE – Funeral service for Elton Newman, 81, will be held on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Timrod Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday 3:00-4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Timrod Baptist Church, 4227 Timrod Road, Bethune, S.C. 29009 or to KershawHealth Hospice. Mr. Newman passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Born in Bethune, he was the son of the late James Elmer and Hattie Evelyn Eubanks Newman. He retired from the United States Army National Guard with 30 years of service and also retired from DuPont after 31 years of service. He was a member of Timrod Baptist Church and enjoyed family time, hunting, fishing, and gardening. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Billie Huggins Newman; daughter, Donna Newman Tyner (Danny) of Lugoff; brothers, Milledge Newman (Jean) and Paschal Newman (Verna); sisters, Geraldine Davis, Rhea Knight (Jackie) and Lawann McCoy (Charles); grandchildren, Ashley Divers (Patrick) and Patrick Tyner (Hope); and great-grandchildren, Austin Divers, Parker Tyner and Isabella Tyner. He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Glenn Newman; and a sister, Hope Norris.
