Camden – Maurice L. “Mac” MacDougal, 89, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on February 11, 2015. Mac was born July 2, 1925, the son of the late Miles and Gertrude (Trudy) (Driscoll) MacDougal in Ellsworth, Maine. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Frances Heaney MacDougal and son, Miles B. MacDougal. Mac was blessed to find a second love late in life with his caring companion, Laura Lee. For 30 years, before moving to Camden, SC in 1982, Mac and Fran raised their family of six children in Rockland, Massachusetts. He and his family thrived and grew deep roots in South Carolina, eventually drawing all of his remaining children to move from New England to be near him. He worked out of the “digger shack” at the Fore River Shipyard for Bethlehem Steel and General Dynamics in Quincy, MA, before retiring from International Paper in Bethune, SC. He was a lifelong fan of all things mechanical and especially stock car racing. Mac’s love of short track racing led him to build motors for stock cars that raced up and down the East Coast. He especially enjoyed working on the dirt and asphalt track stock cars that he and his cousin, Jerry Driscoll ran at Lakeville Speedway, Norwood Arena and Thompson Speedway and others in the New England area in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. Mac was involved in racing for over 60 years, a love that continues today with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed and took great pride in his children’s well-known local dirt track racing team, MacD Racing Partners/Team 65. In his younger years, he enjoyed boating and salt water fishing. Surf casting off the coast of the beaches of Cape Cod with his brother Gary was one of his fondest memories. Mac was a proud veteran of World War II. He served in the US Navy aboard a destroyer in the South Pacific. In his later years via the internet he enjoyed keeping up with current military news and Veteran’s affairs. He often shared old Navy and Marine photos and stories with other veterans of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Camden, SC. He was predeceased by his siblings, Miles B. MacDougal and Luella Groton and survived by his brother, Gary (Mary) MacDougal of Lamoine, Maine. Survivors include his daughters Kathleen (George) Helliwell, Maureen (David) Scott, Susan (Greg) Murphy and sons Michael (Wanita) MacDougal and Mark (Sam) MacDougal and Laura’s three children, Ellen Lee, Charles Lee and Curtis Lee. Grandchildren Cheryl (Vincent) Marshburn, Amy MacDougal, Jason Lubin, Michael (Erin) Caine, Lauren Caine, AJ (Jamie) Murphy, Ashlie (James) Holley, James Murphy, Jared Murphy as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and great grandchildren as well as many beloved cousins, including Joyce Casey and Deanne (Casey) and Deano Metheny who also moved to SC to be near Mac and his family. Mac and Fran always opened their hearts and home to nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends who came to stay. Some stayed for days, some for longer but all remember fondly how the MacDougal home was their second home and that Mac was their other Dad. In Mac’s final days, close family friend Maria Glenn joined the family at the home to represent Mac’s “other kids”. Mac will be remembered for the devotion to his family and love of travel, especially in his camper, which never left home unless the destination was to visit his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews or cousins. He loved having family home cookouts and enjoyed all of his family summers by his backyard pool. Mac’s decision to move the family to South Carolina was a major life change that evolved from worry to happiness as the years passed and South Carolina became our home. We thank Dad for this and how he has blessed this family with his guidance and love. A memorial service will be held Monday at 4:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. Danny Hedgepath will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3-4 p.m. at the funeral home.
