Obituary of Gladys Potter
ELGIN – Funeral service for Gladys Goff Potter, 85, will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home.
Mrs. Potter was called home peacefully on Thursday, December 20, 2012 with family at her side. Born on June 7, 1927 in Blaney, she was a daughter of the late Ira O. and Liddie P. Goff. She graduated from Blaney School and entered nurse’s training at the Camden Hospital. She later worked for Southern Bell and eventually went to work at the Clemson diagnostic lab where she was a receptionist and operator. In the late 1960’s she opened Glady’s beauty salon and ran the business until she sold it late 1978. She also served as the Town Clerk for the Town of Elgin.
Later in her life she enjoyed helping with her grandchildren, gardening and helping with the care of her sick family members when she could. She did not like to see anyone hungry and would sometimes send food or refreshments to local firefighters and law enforcement. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Coleman (Donnie), son, John Ira Potter (Paula); daughter-in-law, Jeannie R. Potter, all of Elgin; sisters, Mary Pate of Camden, Patricia Motley of Elgin, Derice Dehon (Russell) of Columbia; brother, Preston Goff (Laura) of Elgin; sister-in-law, Joyce Goff; grandchildren, Chris Potter (Christie), Hannah Potter, Chandler Coleman, Owen Potter and Chloe Coleman, all of Elgin; great-grandchildren, Christopher Murphy and Victoria Potter both of Elgin; brother-in-law, J. Randolph Potter (Joan) of Greer, S.C.; plus many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by son, Deputy Sheriff Chris Potter; husband, E.C. Potter, Jr.; sister, Betty Brazell; brothers, Bobby R. Goff and Larry M. Goff.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to her sisters, Patricia and Derice, and cousin Helen Register for staying at mom’s side during her last days and to the staff at Lexington Extended Care and Lexington Medical Center sixth floor south for the help and compassion shown during the last stages of mom’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Hillcrest Baptist Church AWANA program, PO Box 85, Elgin, S. C. 29045 in her memory.
