CAMDEN – James Doyle Clackum, affectionately called “Red”, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 27, 2015. Mr. Clackum was born in Marietta, GA on February 6, 1928. He attended Marietta schools and graduated from Marietta High in 1945, where he was a star guard for the Marietta High School Football Team. After graduating he served a short period of time in the U.S. Air Force at the end of WWII. James spent his adult life employed in the truck transportation business. He started working for his family at Clackum Brothers Transfer, and then he later worked for Superior Trucking followed by Mayfield Transportation in Atlanta, GA. He also worked for Home Transportation in Marietta, GA. While working there, he attended evening classes at Georgia State College taking courses in Truck Transportation. In 1974, he and his family moved to Milledgeville, GA where he was employed with J&M Transportation as Vice President of Operations. While in Milledgeville, he enjoyed serving as a member of the Rotary Club. He also enjoyed boating while living on the lake. Builders Transport purchased J&M Transportation in 1983 and James and his family was offered the opportunity to move to Camden, S.C. to Builders Home Office. He remained employed at Builders Transportation until his retirement in 1995 as Vice President of Operations of the Dedicated Fleet Division. After his retirement he stayed active playing golf with his retired and non-retired friends, working in his yard, and keeping up with his beloved favorite team the Georgia Bulldogs. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Chilton Clackum, of Camden, S.C.; sons, Doyle Clackum of Gracewood, GA, Chris Clackum (Kamela) of Lugoff; daughter, Janice Humphries of Camden; 3 granddaughters, Elizabeth Gebreamlak (Wondeson) of Columbia, Allie Ijeh of Lugoff, Sterling Clackum of Lugoff; 3 grandsons, Lynn Humphries, Jr., of TX, Matthew Humphries of Bluffton, S.C., Benjamin Clackum of Lugoff; and 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his parents, 7 brothers and sisters. He attended Lugoff First Baptist Church, Lugoff and contributions may be made to either the building fund of Lugoff First Baptist Church or S.C. Special Olympics 1276 Assembly St., Columbia, S.C. 29201. Services will be held at Powers Funeral Home on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A visitation will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with a service beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Mayes-Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta, GA with burial to follow in Kennesaw Memorial Park.
