Obituary of Betty Lawler

COLUMBIA - A Celebration of the Life of Betty Fulmer Lawler will be held at Shandon Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 23rd, at 6pm. As a true believer and Christmas being her favorite time of year, we ask that you dress in your best holiday attire. After the service in the Sanctuary, a receiving of friends, family and loved ones will be held in the Gathering Place at Shandon. Betty ascended on the day of the Lord, Sunday, December 20th. She was born in Greer, SC to the late Philip Areteamis Fulmer and May Corley Fulmer Watson on a glorious day January 25th, 1951. Betty lived 64 wonderful years surrounded by loyal friends, loving family, and faith in the Lord. Betty was the youngest of three children, sister to Philip Elee Fulmer (Charlie) and the late Edna Louise Warren (Ray). She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Mickey Lawler, her adoring sons Brian and Jeff, and her granddaughter Alex. She is also survived by her cousins Susie Hill, Suzanne Moore, sister-in-law Kathy Lawler Merlette (Joe), nieces, nephews and her church family. In her youth, Betty was a proud member of the Girl Scouts of America and the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls or just "Rainbow Girls" for short. Following her service to the Rainbow Girls, she later initiated into the of the Order of the Eastern Star, Columbia Chapter #59 on March 28th, 1969. In addition to her service to the community and being naturally musically inclined, Betty had her own band in high school named The Esquires which she strummed the guitar. She also gracefully played piano aside from her band. Betty graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1968, and loyally served on the reunion committee for a number of years as she always cheered "Go Shamrocks!" Betty began her career as a cosmetologist and later "ran the show" as an optometrist assistant for many years with the late Dr. Charlie Peeples. Mickey and Betty then decided to go into business for themselves by opening Mickey's second company duly named 2nd Wind in 1985. They have built a reputation in Columbia for over thirty years now, as being the very best in the business. Their company now supports over fifty 2nd Wind employees and their families. With her tireless dedication and service to the industry, Betty was named HVAC Woman of the Year in 2015. Betty's true passions included helping others, rescuing animals, attending church, and of course music. She was actively involved and served on multiple committees as well as always cheering on her sons' at numerous baseball games at the Polo Road Ballpark Complex. Betty enjoyed travelling to the Caribbean and Mexico where she could practice her Spanish, but her heart was most content with her toes in the sand at the South End of Pawleys Island. She spent countless moments at the Valhalla beach house talking walks along the beach, playing cards, enjoying beautiful sunsets and being surrounded by the ones she loved. Betty was also quite the dancer, beginning with Shagging but also picking up a bit of Salsa dancing along the way. Betty also truly admired Columbia and its history by continually supporting Historic Columbia. Betty will always be known for putting others before herself because that was just, Her Way. As the matriarch of The Lawlers and their business, she loved and adored her family, extended family and wanted to do everything in her power to help them in all their dreams and endeavors. As an avid member of her Sunday School class at Shandon, Betty truly worshiped the Lord. While she left us all too soon, she can now watch over and protect us from above. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in her honor to Cullen's Archangel RescuE or C.A.R.E. at http://www.caretoadopt.org/, a local animal rescue and foster organization that Betty dearly loved and/or the American Cancer Society at https://donate.cancer.org/index.
