James “Jimmy” Hurst Watson, 76, of Camden, S.C., longtime teacher and headmaster, died July 7, 2008, after an extended illness. Born in Knoxville, Tenn., he was the son of the late Roney Hurst and Katherine Watson. Mr. Watson served in the United States Army. He graduated from Marion Military Institute and later received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Mr. Watson taught at Carlisle Military School for 11 years and then served for the next 7 years as Headmaster for the Patterson School in Happy Valley, N.C. He later resumed teaching for Camden Military Academy from 1982 to 1996. He loved to travel and had been a Mobil Travel representative for Mobil Travel Guide, writing recommendations and ratings for the guide book for 30 years. After retirement, he worked for the Kershaw County Council on Aging and delivered meals to those who lovingly called him “Mister” Jim. Mr. Watson was active in Grace Episcopal Church having served on the Vestry and as an usher. He was a member of the Springdale Hall Club, Golden K, Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, and a member of Historic Camden Foundation and served as president of his college social fraternity Phi Sigma Kappa. Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Mary Gloe Watson; a son, James Christopher Watson and his wife, Tammy Pope of Camden; a daughter, Heather Gloe Boyles and husband, Michael Price Boyles of Camden. Also, he is survived by a sister, Mary Ann Watson of Washington, D.C.; two grandsons, James Louis Watson and Andrew Price Boyles; three granddaughters, Mary Margaret Watson, Natalie Joy Watson, and Emily Gloe Boyles; and by his faithful “Scotties” Moosie and Bonnie Blue. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Doug Holmes will officiate. Following the service a reception will be held at Proctor Hall, Lyttleton St., Camden, S.C. for family and friends. Memorials may be made to Kershaw County Humane Society, Grace Episcopal Church, or Kershaw County Council on Aging.
