Obituary of Rebecca A. Maples
CAMDEN – A celebration of life service for Rebecca Anderson Maples, 81, will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. The Rev. Todd Horton will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. A burial service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Spring Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Nichols, S.C., Mears Funeral Home will be assisting the family in Nichols. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Indian Waters Council at 715 Betsy Dr., Columbia SC 29210.
Mrs. Maples, wife of the late Dr. Dwight Maples, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017. Born in N.C., she was a daughter of the late Herman and Louvirne Howell Anderson. She was a member of Springvale Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed family research and Genealogy.
Mrs. Maples had a Biology Degree with a minor in English from the University of South Carolina and a Master’s Degree in Math from the University of Florida. She began teaching at the age of 19 in Whiteville, NC and over time taught in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina retiring from both the State of Florida and the State of South Carolina. Most of her teaching years were spent at Wildwood High School and Williston High School in Florida and at Lugoff-Elgin High School in Lugoff, South Carolina. The last years of her career were spent at Central Carolina Technical College and Midlands Technical College. In 2006 she was named Mathematics Department Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year at Midlands Technical College. In 1964 she entered the Pillsbury Bake Off and was a finalist winning a trip to California to represent the State of Florida in a National Bake Off. Her greatest pride and joy was her family.
Surviving are her son, Dr. Durham Russell Maples of Camden; daughters, Dr. Dina Maples Blankenship (Terry) of Lugoff and Dr. Melanie Maples Begly of St. Matthews; and grandchildren, Zachary Elliott Begly, Benjamin Maples Blankenship, William Anderson Blankenship and Austin Gabriel Begly. She was predeceased by brothers, Herman Aleas Anderson, Jr. and Durham Howell Anderson.
