Obituary of Martha Wood Pitts

Martha Wood Pitts, 85, of Bethune, S.C. and Savannah, Ga., passed away on January 6, 2009 in Savannah. Mrs. Pitts was born in Grover, S.C. to the late Rev. Paul T. Wood and Bessie Reasonover Wood. Her early years were spent in Methodist parsonages throughout the state. She graduated from Columbia College Magna Cum Laude. While at Columbia College she was listed in Who's Who and the editor of the Literary Magazine. Mrs. Pitts taught school in Clinton, S.C. where she met and later married Pascal Lewis Pitts. In 1957, they moved to Bethune, SC. Mrs. Pitts retired from the Kershaw County School District. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was active in all areas. She was a member and past president of the Woman's Club of Bethune and was active in many forms of community involvement. She lived her life radiating Christian love. She was predeceased in death by her husband P. Lewis Pitts of Bethune and her brother Dr. Paul A. Wood of Camden. She is survived by son, Lewis Pitts, Jr. and his wife, Spoma Jovanovic of Greensboro, N.C.; son, Paul Pitts and his wife, Karen Storey of Armuchee, Ga.; daughters, Margaret Parker and her husband, Clyde of Savannah, Ga., and Helen Bradley and her husband, Jay of Savannah, Ga.; and grandchildren Gregg Lowery and his wife, Brandolyn, Stephen Pitts, Jeff Storey-Pitts and Kevin Storey-Pitts. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Harold Pitts and his wife, Mary of Greensboro, N.C, and sisters-in-law, Ruby Wood of Camden, Fay Grube, Katrine Pitts and Sarah Pitts of Clinton, S.C. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff, S.C. Funeral services will be conducted by the Reverends Barbara Segars and Paul A. Wood, Jr. at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 8, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Bethune, S.C, with burial at 3:00 p.m. in Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton, S.C.. Memorials may be made to Bethel Methodist Church, P. O. Box 275, Bethune, S.C. 29009.
