CAMDEN - Yesterday, Jean Morehead Larkin died peacefully in her home on Union Street in Camden, South Carolina. The daughter of John Lindsay Morehead and Louise Nickerson Morehead, she was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1928. Formerly married to Peter A. Larkin, who predeceased her in 1969, she lived in Charlotte and in Wilmington, Delaware before making Camden her home in 1964. Jean is survived by four children and their spouses: John and Annie Larkin of San Antonio, Texas; Peter and Ashley Larkin of Houston; Louise and David Cutler of Camden; and Jean and John Dobson of San Antonio. She leaves, in addition, eight grandchildren: Robert, John and Larkin Dobson; Sophie, Mary and John Larkin IV; and Lindsay and Mia Larkin. Two nieces, Lucy Chatham and Louise Neaves, and two nephews, John and Albert Chatham remain. Her two sisters, Mary Chatham of Elkin, North, Carolina, and Lindsay Dickson, of Charlotte, preceded her in death. After attending public school in Charlotte, Jean Larkin graduated from Chatham Hall in Virginia, in 1947, and from Briarcliff Junior College in New York in 1949. A member of the Junior League in Charlotte and in Wilmington, she was also an active volunteer in the hospital auxiliary of Charlotte Memorial, now Carolina’s Medical Center. She served as a member of the central selection committee of the Morehead Foundation in Chapel Hill prior to becoming a trustee of the foundation in 1984. She served on this board until 2005. She has been active in the antique business in Camden for many years. She is a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Camden. She helped to found the former Joseph Kershaw Academy and supported the Kershaw County Humane Society. Jean was a member of Charlotte Country Club, the Charlotte City Club, Springdale Hall and Camden Country Club. Known to her friends as “Motley,” she was a gifted athlete who loved the outdoors. As a junior, she won the North Carolina State tennis championship for her age bracket. In Charlotte and in Camden, she was very involved with horses. She helped Joe Fargis buy the mare, “Touch of Class,” who later won an Olympic gold medal. An excellent shot, Jean loved to shoot skeet and to hunt. Jean Morehead Larkin was a loyal and devoted friend, and she will be missed by her family and friends. We mourn her passing. Funeral service will be held at her home at 101 Union Street in Camden, South Carolina, at 11:00 am on Monday, April 30th, The Reverend Harry E. Lawhon, Jr., Rector emeritus of Grace Episcopal Church, presiding. The burial service will take place at 4:00 pm. at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donors give to the charity of their choice.
