I remember the Hall family when I was a child, my parents would stop by and talk and sometimes pick up a cake from Mrs. Margaret. I’m so sorry to hear about James’ passing. I will keep his family in my prayers.

Batter Up- Mr. James Hall, Umpire & Legend-
Very few memories of my childhood and teenage years growing up in Kershaw County, SC, live outside the white painted lines of the softball diamond. It’s where I met my closest friends, built the confidence I have today, learned there’s a time to take the pitch and if you go down- it better be swingin’. The lessons of life found between the bases not only gave structure to my after school afternoons, and probably kept me out of a lot of trouble, but taught me to hustle down the baseline, watch, observe, wait, and go, go, get down. It’s a heartfelt honor to give credit where it’s due. Mr James Hall, was one of the few fine folks that selflessly gave his time, knowledge, and part of his spirit to us youngsters and did so willingly, while serving our community behind home plate.
Girls softball in Kershaw County would not be the same without the dedication of Mr James Hall. Mr Hall umpired more softball games through the KC Rec Department and Camden High than his clicker can probably count. He gave us his best with each call and encouraged us to showcase the value of sportsmanship that is deserving of any field, each game and of every player.
The twinkle in his eye and his loud, over the top punch pull motion of a strikeout at the bottom of the 7th was the same enthusiasm as a KO in the top of the 1st. His love of the game was so easily shared with us and I’m so grateful for his time and commitment to our beloved sport. I hope he knew that he was positively influencing young girls across the county. His legacy will live on as many of us are still frequent flyers in those old dugouts teaching the same lessons of life to our little ones. I tip my old ball cap to you, Mr Umpire. Thank you for your efforts and dedication to our beloved game and the memories made on those old clay fields of my childhood.

I remember James Hall at the ball field behind the plate mostly. You always knew it was going to be a fair game when he was around and let’s don’t forget what he did for girls softball and our community the time he invested in young players and the knowledge he shared with us all he was very much respected and we certainly need more people like him who put others before themselves . Rest in peace and rejoice with your family that have went before you and watch over the ones left behind.
