Obituary of Charles D. Phillips
ELGIN – Charles D. “Phil” Phillips III went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 2, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles D. Phillips Jr. of Bailey/Nash County N.C. and Mary Louise (Davis) Phillips of Mullins/Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Madge L. Klein. He was born July 13, 1947 in Washington, D.C. and a 1966 graduate of Bladensburg Senior High School, MD. He was an avid researcher of Genealogy into his ancestry. He was referred to as the “Old Coot” when hunting and in the woods sharing special times with God. He also enjoyed camping, surf fishing, and most of all, spending time with his precious granddaughters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Paula E. Smith Phillips; daughter, Tammi Rampino and her husband, Anthony of Bunker Hill, W.V.; son, Christopher D. Phillips and his wife, Angela Hinson Phillips of Elgin; three granddaughters, Antoinette Rampino and McKenna and Kelsey Phillips, whom were the loves of his life. He is also survived by brothers-in-law, Eddie Smith (Carol) and Douglas Smith; along with numerous nieces and nephews and very special cousins Pam Perry and Betty Avery.
Mr. Phillips spent most of his working career in private industry and 30 plus years of Federal Service with the Department of Defense stationed at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Md. where he retired in 2006.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Ocean Woods Cemetery, Myrtle Beach at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Phillips would request that memorial contributions be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church, c/o Pauline Lockee, 132 Hudson Road, Fountain Inn, S.C. 29644, which was founded by his ancestor in 1820.
